(ALHT) ALLIED HEALTH COURSES
  

• ALHT.NTR- Principles of Nutrition

 This course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge in human nutrition. The course provides a firm grounding in the study of the structure, role, and function of macronutrients and micronutrients in the human diet, and the processes whereby the human body digest, absorbs and transports nutrients. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.EXT- Medical Assistant Externship

The medical assistant student will practice in a doctor's office or other medical facility to gain work experience in the performance of medical assistant administrative and clinical duties. Minimum of 220 hours of practical experience. This class requires that a student be assigned Monday-Friday, day hours only.

• ALHT.PHAR- Pharmacology

Pharmacology as it relates to current drug therapy. The major concepts include drug classification, mechanisms of action, therapeutic effects, clinical indication, methods of administration, adverse reactions, and drug interactions.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.PATH-  Pathophysiology

Specific disease processes, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatments, prognoses, and prevention. An overview of the disease process, infectious diseases, neoplasms, and congenital diseases is also presented.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.COD-  Medical Coding

ICD-9-CM and CPT systems used in the coding of diagnoses and procedures in health care facilities. Emphasis is on the development of basic skills needed for accurate coding for medical billing purposes.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.SPEC-  Specialty Areas

Advanced concepts of clinical procedures, including diet/nutrition, gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, neurology, orthopedics, psychiatry, rehabilitation, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, endrocrinology, oncology, immunology, and allergy.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.LAW- Medical Ethics and Law

Introduces students, in allied health fields, to potential legal and ethical issues which may be experienced in the health care environment. Students will discuss the legal system as it applies to the patient, health care provider, and medical institution; and review medical ethical and bioethical issues.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.ANAT-  Human Anatomy and Physiology

A survey of the structure and function of the organ systems of the human body preceded by a brief consideration of anatomical terminology, cell structure, and the microscopic structure of tissues.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.TERM-  Medical Terminology

Study of the basic structure of medical terms including prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, plurals, pronunciation, spelling, and definitions. The course introduces students to fundamental concepts in human anatomy and physiology.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.BILL- Medical Billing and Insurance Procedures

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the basic types of medical insurance programs available in today's health care system. It also acquaints students with billing formats using the universal claim form and provides the skills necessary to master the basic aspects of medical insurance billing. Current reimbursement methodologies (i.e., RbRVS, APC's) and compliance will also be covered.

• ALHT.MOP-  Medical Office Procedures

This course provides an overview of administrative tasks performed in a medical office. Students will learn about office financial management including accounting concepts, about the types of medical recordkeeping, accepting and entering payments, and human resource management.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• ALHT.MBO-  Medical Business Operations

This course introduces the student to the administrative portion of the health care environment as well as important legal and ethical guidelines. Students will become familiar with health information systems including interpersonal communication and customer service techniques, and appointment scheduling.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

(BH) BEHAVIORAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

• BH.PSYC-  Introduction to Psychology. 

An examination of the nature of psychology, its history, techniques, learning theory, human adjustment, personality, state of consciousness, development, statistics, social, abnormal, and psychological topics. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

(HU) HUMANITIES

• HU.CT- Critical Thinking

This course is designed to introduce the theories and application of critical analysis with emphasis on developing sequential reasoning skills. Topics include the foundations of arguments, value assumptions and ethical decision making, reality assumptions and deductive arguments, inductive arguments and generalizations, reasoning errors, the power of language, the impact of media power, and persuasive speaking. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• HU.HIS- American History

    Discovery and exploration by European powers, colonial foundations, movement for independence, early years of the Republic, national growth and expansion, sectionalism and the Civil War. Reconstruction, industrial expansion and related problems, imperialism, World War I and aftermath, Depression and New Deal, World War II, and the development of the United States since World War II. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

• HU.IC- Interpersonal Communication

The study of the communication process in one-to-one relationships with emphasis on conflict management, listening, nonverbal communication, gender, and culture. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

(IS)  INFORMATION SYSTEMS

• IS.CA-  Computer Applications

Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and e-mail.  This course provides an introduction to computer operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and e-mail programs. When combined with IS 107 the two courses meet the requirements of IS 102, Computers and Application Software.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

(MA) MATHEMATICS

• MA.BIZ- Business Mathematics

This course provides instruction in the mathematical operations associated with the retail, banking, and accounting industries. Topics include decimals, fractions, and percentages; bank services; interest and payment plans; purchase orders and invoices; selling prices and mark-ups; and payroll and inventory procedures. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

(NS) NATURAL SCIENCES
   

• NS.FND-  Foundations in Science  

Encompasses the basic concepts and principles of both biological and physical sciences. This course explores scientific knowledge and scientific thinking and examines the diversity and unity within the natural world. 3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Prerequisite: none.

(PD)  PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

• PD.SKIL-  Student Success Skills

This course provides instruction in the both theory and practice of personal growth that lead to successful life experience. Topics include research in critical self-analysis of student habits and attitudes; and psychological impediments to successfully setting and achieving personal goals. Critical self examination of student planning techniques through analysis and research of personal financial legal documents.  Information on income tax procedures; savings methods; investment planning; risk management and insurance; and credit records, credit law, and the cost of credit.  3 Semester Hours-4 hours per week for 14 weeks.
